Why Every Yoga Teacher Training Student Needs a Yoga Card Deck
When I did my yoga teacher training (YTT), I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed. There were thick manuals, endless note-taking, and so many new things to learn all at once — Sanskrit, anatomy, alignment, sequencing... it felt like my brain was doing backbends too! I kept wishing I had something simple and visual — a tool I could just glance at to remember the key things without flipping through pages or digging through my notes. Something I could carry with me, that actually made everything click a bit easier.
That’s exactly how the idea for the Yoga Asanas Card Deck began. Over the years, I worked to create something I wish I had during my training: a supportive tool that brings together the most important knowledge in a simple, visual format. And from what dozens of YTT students and yoga teachers have told me, it’s been a total game changer.
If you’re in the middle of YTT or just graduated, here’s how this deck can make your journey smoother, more enjoyable, and way more effective.
1. Learn and Memorize Poses Faster
One of the biggest challenges in YTT is learning pose names in both Sanskrit and English (and for many of us, English isn't even our first language!). It can be intimidating to memorize unfamiliar Sanskrit terms while also mastering alignment, benefits, cues, and modifications.
Each card in the deck includes both the English and Sanskrit names — making it easier to learn and recognize both as you study, practice, and teach. Seeing the names consistently helps build familiarity without pressure, so when your teacher or future students use the traditional terms, you’re already fluent.
And beyond just practical memory, I believe using Sanskrit is a way of honoring the roots of yoga. These names carry cultural and philosophical meaning — they're not just labels for physical shapes. By including both names, the deck encourages respect for the tradition while making it accessible and practical.
2. Build Confidence in Sequencing
Creating sequences from scratch can feel daunting in YTT, you want to guide your students safely and smoothly, but how do you know which poses flow well together?
This deck gives you a structure that helps you experiment confidently. Poses are clearly categorized into “Sun” (energizing) and “Moon” (calming), giving you an intuitive way to design classes based on the energy you want to offer.
Each card also falls into a broader pose family — standing, balancing, backbends, seated forward bends, twists, inversions, meditative, and restorative — all color-coded for easy sorting. This helps you balance your sequences, avoid repetition, and build creative flows that make sense both physically and energetically.
3. Practice Teaching with Ease
In YTT, it’s totally normal to worry about what to say when you're up in front of the room. You might blank on a cue or forget how to offer a modification.
Each card in the deck includes clear teaching cues, benefits, modifications, and contraindications, all written in a concise, non-intimidating way. You’ll have reliable reference points to help guide your practice teaching and class planning. Think of it as a visual cue card for your own confidence, one that grows with you as you gain experience.
4. Portable & Practical Study Aid
Let’s be real, YTT life is intense. You’re juggling physical practice, theory, anatomy, philosophy, and homework... and your bag is probably already full.
The Yoga Asanas Card Deck is compact, lightweight, and easy to carry. You can pull it out for a quick study session between classes, bring it to the studio, or use it to plan your sequences at a café or in the park. It’s a super practical tool that saves you time and helps you review without screens or bulky manuals

A quick note (since I often get asked!)
I did my YTT at Santosha Yoga Institute on the dreamy island of Nusa Lembongan, Bali, and I can’t recommend it enough. It was a truly transformative experience, with kind teachers, a supportive community, and the most breathtaking views you can imagine (yes, our Shala was on the beach). It was intense, emotional, inspiring and unforgettable. If you’re considering doing your YTT, this place holds a special place in my heart.
