Ashtanga Yoga Primary and Intermediate Series posters.
The Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series is a specific sequence of yoga poses (asanas) that are practiced in a set order. It is the foundational sequence of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system, which was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. The Primary Series, also known as "Yoga Chikitsa" (meaning yoga therapy), is designed to align the body, mind, and breath and is intended to be practiced regularly to build strength, flexibility, and stamina.
The series consists of a set sequence of standing, seated, and finishing postures, as well as specific transitions (vinyasas) between each pose. It is a challenging and dynamic practice that emphasizes the synchronization of breath (ujjayi breath) with movement (vinyasa) and the use of internal locks (bandhas) to create stability and energy flow within the body.
The Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series is considered a complete practice in itself, but it can also serve as a foundation for more advanced Ashtanga sequences, such as the Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana) and Advanced Series (Sthira Bhaga), which build upon the skills and strength developed in the Primary Series.
The Ashtanga Yoga Intermediate Series, also known as "Nadi Shodhana" (meaning nerve cleansing), is the second series of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system. Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, it is intended to purify and strengthen the nervous system, the subtle energy channels (nadis), and the energy centers (chakras) within the body.
The Intermediate Series builds upon the foundation established in the Primary Series, introducing more challenging asanas (poses) and more advanced variations of poses from the Primary Series. It is a dynamic and physically demanding practice that emphasizes the integration of breath (ujjayi breath), movement (vinyasa), and internal energy locks (bandhas) to create stability and energy flow within the body.
The Intermediate Series consists of a set sequence of standing, seated, and finishing postures, as well as specific transitions (vinyasas) between each pose. It includes backbends, hip openers, arm balances, and inversions, among other poses, to further develop strength, flexibility, and stamina.
